Why Now? Starting Something New in My Forties

Someone once asked me, “You are already in your forties. Why didn't you start earlier?”

Or, in the more familiar Indonesian version, “Udah tua, kenapa nggak dari dulu?”

I remember hearing it and not knowing what to say.

It was not because the question offended me. Maybe a small part of me had already asked myself the same thing. Why now? Why did it take this long to create something under my own name?

The honest answer is, I do not really know.

Maybe I was not ready before. Maybe I was too busy moving from one responsibility to another. Maybe life needed to take me through different jobs, people, industries, and experiences first.

Whatever the reason, starting something new in my forties does not feel like starting over. For me, it feels more like finally becoming honest about the work I want to do and the direction I want to take.

Why did I wait until now?

For many years, I was comfortable working behind the scenes.

I helped businesses organize ideas, communicate their value, reach the right audience, and move projects forward. My work has taken me across hospitality, villas, food and beverage, lifestyle, interiors, and creative businesses, mostly in Bali and Indonesia.

Sometimes my role was clearly about marketing. At other times, it became a mix of brand strategy, business development, project coordination, operations, and solving whatever needed to be solved that day.

My experience in work is not come from one perfect path. I do many kind of jobs, meet different people, learn from mistake, and keep going even if I don’t know what is the answer.

For a long time, I thought that was simply what work looked like. I didn't stop to think about how those experiences connected or what they said about me.

Only recently did I begin to see the pattern.

I like to help business to be more clear. I like to connect brand, growth, people, and system that really works. I not only see how business look from outside, but also if the idea can work inside too.

Perhaps I could not have explained that ten years ago.

Is 40 too late to start something new?

I do not think so.

Of course, starting later can feel uncomfortable. By this age, people often expect you to have everything settled. A clear career. A stable direction. A confident answer when someone asks what you are doing with your life.

But life is rarely that organized.

Some people find their direction early. Others need more time and experience before things begin to make sense. Neither journey is more valid than the other.

Starting in your forties also means you are not arriving empty-handed. You bring years of experience, difficult lessons, better judgment, and a clearer understanding of what matters to you.

You may also need to unlearn some things. I am still working on that part.

I am learning not to wait for complete confidence before taking action. I am learning that uncertainty does not always mean I am making the wrong decision. Sometimes, it simply means I am doing something new.

Why am I creating this website?

I wanted to create one place that feels like mine.

A place where I can share selected work, explain how I think, and write about what I am learning along the way. Not because I suddenly have all the answers, but because I am ready to stop hiding behind the idea that everything must be perfect first.

Creating a personal website feels more vulnerable than I expected.

It is easier to work quietly behind someone else’s business. Putting my own name, experience, and thoughts in one place is different. It makes me question whether my work is good enough, whether my story is interesting enough, and whether I have anything meaningful to say.

I still have those questions.

But I would rather begin with some uncertainty than continue waiting for a version of myself who feels completely ready.

What am I building next?

This website will grow with me.

It will be a home for my work in business growth, brand strategy, marketing, and business systems. I also want to use this space to share honest observations about work, career changes, building confidence, and creating something meaningful at your own pace.

I do not present myself as an individual who possesses complete understanding or definitive answers.

Rather, I write from the perspective of someone who remains engaged in learning, continually questioning, and seeking to understand the possibilities that the future may hold.

This ongoing process of reflection and inquiry serves as an appropriate foundation for commencing this discussion.

If you are also changing direction, returning to an old idea, or starting something new at an age when people think you should already have everything settled, I hope you remember this:

Starting now does not make you late.

It may simply mean that now is the first time you are ready to begin as the person you have become.
